Terms and Conditions for the UKTI MWC 2012 Competition

All UK companies currently operating in the UK mobile industry are eligible to enter, subject to the definitions below.

1. General


1.1 All UK based Small to Medium Sized Enterprises may enter the UK Trade & Investment supported competition to become the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company.

2. Definition of a Small to Medium Sized Enterprise (SME)


2.1 UK Trade & Investment has adopted the European Union definition of a SME. This is a business, which meets all of the following criteria:
a) has less than 250 employees;
b) has an annual turnover not exceeding EURO 50m, or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding EURO 43m;
c) is independent, i.e. not more than 25 % of its capital or voting rights are owned by one enterprise, or jointly by several enterprises, which fail to meet any of the above points a) and b), although this threshold may be exceeded in the following two cases:
(i) if the business is held by public investment corporations, venture capital companies or institutional investors, provided no control is exercised either individually or jointly over it;
(ii) if the capital is spread in such a way that it is not possible to determine by whom it is held and the business can legitimately declare that 25% or more of it is not owned by one enterprise or jointly by several enterprises falling outside the definition of a SME.

3. Requirements for Participants


3.1 You must comply with ALL of the following conditions.
a) You correctly complete and submit the appropriate documentations required for the competition by the required entry date. UK Trade & Investment reserves the right to reject any application that it considers for any reason to be unsuitable.
b) You can demonstrate that you are:
- selling products or services originating substantially in the UK; or
- adding significant value to a product or service of non UK origin;
You will be ineligible if you do not own the brand you are selling and the brand owner either already exports to the market concerned, or withholds permission to export to that market.
c) You must be able to attend Mobile World Congress 2012. Finalists will be provided with a visitor pass for the event but travel and accommodation costs are not reimbursed.
d) You must complete feedback forms and return to UK Trade & Investment as requested and provide a case study about your experience. It is important that you feedback to UKTI with any outcomes that you derived from the show, during or at a later stage when the outcome has been confirmed.

3.2. UK Trade & Investment reserves the right to withdraw your participation at any time, if you:


a) Fail to comply with any of these Terms & Conditions;
b) Cause embarrassment to Her Majesty’s Government, the host nation or other participants involved in the activity, for example, by inappropriate or offensive behaviour or by the promotion of products or services of an unacceptably low quality or of an inappropriate or offensive nature. The final decision on acceptability will rest with UK Trade & Investment, taking into account the sensitivities of the host nation and other participants;
c) Provide false or inaccurate information.
d) Fail to deliver to an acceptable standard as detailed by your submission entry and statements made to judging panel.

If any of the above circumstances arise, your business may also be excluded from future involvement in this and/or any other scheme operated by UK Trade & Investment.

Judging criteria


The judging criteria for the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company will be as follows:
  • The judging panel is seeking the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company
  • Innovation is not restricted to technological innovation: for example new applications of legacy technology will be considered
  • The judging panel will consider the global impact of the innovation when making their considerations
  • In this respect innovation that can demonstrate global reach and potential will be considered more favourably by the judges
  • Companies entering will be asked for track record to date to add credibility to the potential of the innovation
  • The judges will be seeking to consider any innovation, however simple, as long as it is effective, easy to understand, effective and has global potential

Competition prizes


The competition will be based around a number of prizes
  • Each company entering the competition will have the potential to be showcased on the news section of www.smartukproject.co.uk
  • A shortlist of companies will be provided with free advice on pitching their innovation to the judges and the media. They will also be eligible to attend UKTI’s pre-Mobile World Congress media networking event. In 2011 more than 30 journalists attended this event including national and broadcast media, consumer technology and mobile press and trade and technical press
  • The finalists in the UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company will be provided with free entry to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 2012 (27th February to 1st March 2012)
  • The finalists will present their innovation at a seminar event run by UKTI at Mobile World Congress to a global audience of decision makers in mobile and mobile network operators and the judging panel
  • The finalists will receive media training and exposure to the global press and media at Mobile World Congress 2012
  • The finalists will be able to display the logo for “UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company – finalist 2012” on all corporate literature and branding
  • The winning company will receive further media exposure at Mobile World Congress 2012
  • The winning company will be able to display the logo for “UK’s Most Innovative Mobile Company – winner 2012” on all corporate literature and branding
  • The winning company will receive a trophy
  • The winning company will receive a showcase slot at UKTI’s “Showcase of UK technology” event on 3rd August 2012 at the British Business Embassy, Lancaster House, London, as part of London 2012 Games time business programme.
